Using the Building Utopia Toolkit
Reimagining Futures.
Building Utopia is also a great resource for reimagining organizational strategy, community development, product design and classroom curriculum.
Using the Building Utopia decks allowed my team to think beyond the bounds of our normal problem solving in a really fun and engaging way. The prompts on the cards pushed us to think about a radical future with true liberation at the center, instead of getting bogged down with the limits that we normally impose on ourselves. The tools deck was especially helpful in guiding us to think through what it would look like to build towards that radical future. The Building Utopia decks were so much fun to use and I cannot wait to use them with other teams!

Dream it.
The Building Utopia toolkit is a tool for those daring enough to reshape the future. It forces you to confront the power to create radical new realities for yourself and the world around you. Each card deck is a key to unlocking the forces that shape the present — and the future you want to see.
The guidebook will familiarize you with these decks, introduce new methods of design you may not yet understand, and sharpen your thinking in the art of radical futurism. We’ve included space and prompts throughout this guide to help you mold new worlds and carve out your path to the future you want to build.
The Building Utopia toolkit is perfect for:
Community or organizational building
Establishing organizational values
Educational exercises
Setting product goals
Worldbuilding
Build it.
Pick a Topic Card. If you don’t have a topic in mind, draw one randomly or vote on it.
Draw a Forecasting Card. This sets the time period you’ll design for, guiding future questions.
Draw a Liberation Card. Take turns sharing your answers to the question on the card.
Draw a Method Card. This gives you a way to show what your future solution might look like.
Need ideas? Draw a Tools Card for inspiration on possible solution categories.
If none of the cards fit, use a Blank Card and fill it in with your own idea.
Remember, this is just the usual order. Feel free to rearrange or substitute cards to fit your community’s needs.
